Rain Day in Saudi

When it rains in Saudi….they cancel school.  Well, not always but there was a storm coming through with heavy rain and since the streets of Saudi aren't prepared for this, they cancelled school.  We went to school one Sunday morning with clear blue skies and by 11:00 they announced that we all needed to go home and leave campus by 12:00 noon.  The Ministry of Education were canceling all schools in our area to due to heavy rain.  What an excitement for the kids and teachers.  Busses were arranged, parents called, and the school was empty by 12:01.

No rain came!

That night we received another call at 3:00 in the morning that school was cancelled for Monday.  YEAH!  and again, no rain came.

Since it was still in the forecast, they cancelled school for Tuesday and finally the rain came.  It rained all day and roads were flooded all through the city. This time it was for real.

They cancelled school again for Wednesday and Thursday because of the flooding.  Our school needed time to clean up some classrooms that were flooded and make sure it was safe to come back.  Nobody complained because we had a whole week off of school.

Fortunately our school is set up for emergency situations where we can still run school through Moodle.  Teachers post assignments online which students then have to complete that day in order to be counted as attending school.  It was quite the fun thing in our house with three students and two teachers needing the computers with a very slow internet.  We survived though and enjoyed our Rain Week.

Where is the rain?  This is what we woke up to the first day.

Kids doing virtual school.  Such a bonding moment.

Moodle where we are able to have virtual school.

Even Vika had virtual school.
