Rachel's Last Day

On Rachel's last day we had the opportunity to go out and explore Saudi Arabia one last time with her. We headed out at 5:00 in the morning with two other families for a day in the desert. It was a two and half hour drive out to the Elephant Caves and Ship Rock. On the way we stopped at this camel market where they sale anything you would need for your camel.

Rachel was having a bitter sweet day. She was happy to be here with us but sad that it was going to be her last day here.

They even had bling bling reins for that special camel. They actually have camel beauty contests looking for the most beautiful camel with the biggest lips. I'm sure these bling bling reins help bring out their beauty.
Our next stop was at King Abdul Aziz's Palace. It was fenced off so we couldn't get in to explore.

Across from the palace was an old abandoned village. Actually it is only about 60 years old. This was a village that was abandoned in the 1950's when Aramco and Oil brought in a lot of money. The king was very generous with the money so the villagers were able to build a more modern village across the street.
It was like being on a war set. Even though war didn't destroy this village, it looked like it.

After the village we traveled out to the desert to Elephant Caves. We actually were out in the middle of nowhere. There really weren't any roads so our 4 wheel drive vehicles were very handy. We had to do a little off roading to get here.

These caves were once buried by the sand but the wind has slowly blown the sand to where the entrance of the cave is visible. On the ceiling of the cave were fossils of bones and tusks. They just prove that there were once large animals roaming this area.

This looks like the pelvis or scapula bone of a rather large animal. Very close to it was the skull where you could see large teeth. Below was a fossil of a tusk. The tusks have been removed because of the value of the ivory but the imprint was still there.
Just another shot of the caves. You drive for miles without seeing much of anything but sand and then occasionally there are small hills or mountains.
As we were driving out in the desert we had to stop for this herd of camels. There were several camel herds and Bedouin camps. I'm sure they were wondering what all these foreigners were doing out here. Several weeks ago a group of our friends came out here and were stopped by a Bedouin man who wanted them to all come back to his tent. He said he would kill a goat for them. The group didn't have time so they were kindly trying to explain this but he kept insisting. He finally took his baby out of his truck and asked if they could all hold his baby. It is supposed to be bring lots of good luck to have a foreigner hold your child. We didn't get that kind of response but I'm sure they were curious why we were here.
Our next stop was at Ship Rock. It looks like a ship just out in the middle of nowhere. It once was a fort where the locals would go to hide from intruders. You had to crawl under the rock into a small cave that opened up into a hole that led to the top of the mountain. They had a ladder to climb up the hole. Once up on the mountain they could then see any intruders coming and if they tried to come up the hole, they would be able to defensively protect themselves by shooting down the hole. There wasn't any other way up to the top.



They also had another hole which was a well where they could get water while they lived at the top.

After hiking around, we then had some fun 4 wheeling. Actually, doing donuts in the sand. It was crazy. Our friend Nathan is a pilot and he has no fear of speed. He was the craziest one. I have video of it but can't really upload them here very easily. All the kids got to drive the car, even Vika. I actually got to drive. My first time driving in Saudi.

We got back to our villa at 5:00 and had a few hours to clean up before we had to take Rachel to Bahrain for her flight back home. She had a 1:40 am flight so we didn't need to get to the airport until 11:30. We went out to dinner in Bahrain on our way and tried to not be sad. We had a fun four months with her here with us.

We got to the airport and were told that her flight to London was full so they asked if they could redirect her through Paris and then Paris straight to Salt Lake City. This was a much better flight that would cut off 5 hours of travel time. Of course we said yes. That made it a little easier leaving her knowing that she only had one layover in Paris rather than her other flight which was through London then Los Angeles then to Salt Lake.

It was sad saying goodbye but we will be back in Salt Lake in three months which will go by fast. Loved having her here and look forward to spending the summer with her.

Modeling Day

Vika and her friend Aliya decided to be models one day. Nicole did their makeup with an animal theme then they posed for their photo shoot around our compound. I guess the years of modeling in China have made an impact on Vika. She is quite the fashion guru and loves the camera.

Bahrain

We have been on Spring Break for the past week and decided to finally go over to Bahrain before Rachel left. Bahrain is an island just off the coast of Saudi Arabia. They built a causeway across the water which usually only takes an hour or so to cross. Bahrain is a much more relaxed country. They have movie theaters, pork, alcohol, and women don't have to wear Abayas. We hadn't been before because it just didn't really seem worth all the hassle of taking the family. Even though we can drive, we have to wait in lines at the border in our car and pay toll fees and car insurance. We really wanted to see "Hunger Games" so we decided to just go for it. I have to admit that when I got out of the car without my Abaya on, I felt free. I really don't mind wearing it here in Saudi because I just throw it on over anything. I've actually gone out with my PJ's on underneath, but it was nice to be able to walk around in shorts in Bahrain.

We saw our movie and ate lunch at the mall. It was a fun day. Something different but not sure we will be going much, unless there's a movie we really want to see.

Drive In 4 Wheeling

We decided to take a Friday afternoon (Sabbath day) drive and ended up out at Half Moon Bay. It is a public beach about 45 minutes from our house. Across the street from the beach were these sand dunes where people were parked to watch the line of 4 wheel drive vehicles try to get up the dune. It was like being at the Drive In movies. Hundreds of cars were parked all facing the dune. They would all cheer as people made it up to the top of the dune.

This seems to be the thing to do for the Saudi men (boys).

We did a little driving around in the sand. Jonny and Rachel both drove. We weren't as crazy as some of the others but enough to have fun.

Vika's Birthday

It was Vika's 7th birthday a few weeks ago. She wanted a birthday party so bad, but we were really busy with Soccer tournaments and Basketball tournaments. Her birthday was on March 14, which was the first day of Jonny's JV Basketball tournament at our school. We had to host a two boys from another school in Yanbu, which is on the West Coast of Saudi. We had planned to just have a simple party with cake, ice cream, and a few presents.

Vika was outside playing so I sent Rachel and Jonny out to find her and they came back with a houseful of kids.
These are all the kids on our compound, the older ones at least. They heard the word party and came running.
Vika got a new bike for her birthday. She had a small on in China with training wheels which she didn't get to ride much. Gavin took her outside and she was riding like a pro on two wheels within minutes.
We had just enough cake and ice cream. I'm not a big cake fan so I'm glad we had lots of people to help us eat it all.
The kids all just hung out for awhile. The advantage of living on a compound is that we become just one big happy family. There seems to always be someone for the kids to play with.
Of course Sassy had to be part of the party too.
Vika had to put on a show for us all with her awesome dance moves. She is quite the little hip hop dancer. She's even does the robot.

PARTY NUMBER TWO!!!!

About a week later we actually had an official party for Vika where she invited some of her friends. She wanted chocolate cupcakes so I attempted to decorate them. It's hard to see but some actually spell out Happy Birthday.

Only a few of her friends were actually able to come. Everyone is just too busy right now, but it still was a fun party.
The next morning we had an encore party with some of her other friends who couldn't come the day before. The girls all dressed up and modeled while the boys pretended to be photographers. They put music on and had a little dance.

DHS Scorpian Basketball

Jonny played on the JV boys Basketball Team this year. He is such an awesome basketball player. He was the only Freshman on the team and was their starting point guard. The team played in the SAIKAC tournament a few weeks ago and were undefeated. They have a really good team this year and there wasn't much competition for them. They easily won the championships. It was two days full of some really good basketball. The tournament was at our school so there were lots of students cheering and we even had actual cheerleaders. I felt like we were at a HS basketball game back in the states.

The above picture is Jonny with his coach Mr. Carreon. He is our neighbor and Jonny's Algebra teacher. His family is from Arizona where he and his wife grew up. A few months ago his parents were here and his dad used to teach Math at Mesa Community College in Arizona. We discovered that he was my College Algebra teacher over 30 years ago. Small world....

Jack coached the boys Varsity team and they were also undefeated and won the championships in Kaust last weekend.

Scorpian Girls

This year I had the opportunity to coach the girls soccer team. I've never coached soccer before and have very little experience actually playing but they needed a coach and I was it. I played arena soccer years ago in Palmdale with Gavin and our friends the Schmidt's which was extremely fun, but other than that I've basically just been a soccer mom on the sideline.

Although, I was a little inexperienced, I had a lot of fun. Fortunately, Rachel was here to help me coach. She has much more experience than I do since she played in High School in China. She was a HUGE help!

After two months of practices we finally had our big SAIKAC tournament at Aramco. They had some awesome facilities.
The girls are always fun to coach because they are full of so much energy and spirit. Sometimes it was frustrating because it is hard to get them to really focus on the game. They want to be serious but sometimes the fun just takes over.


The tournament was for both the girls and boys teams so we shared a tent on the field during the day. The above picture was the boys side and the picture below is the girls. Quite the difference.

Rachel was my life saver and the girls all loved having her here to coach. She would do a back handspring for every goal they scored. The girls played hard and it was a tough two days but we came in 5th. I've decided that soccer at this level is really all about luck. One lucky goal can completely change the game. I think our team was much better than some of the others but because of some unlucky points in the game we lost a few of the games only by one goal.

It was a very fun season and I'm looking forward to next year. Nicole was on the training team this year and most likely be on the tournament team next year. I love being able to coach my girls and be there for them.

Now it's on to Girls Basketball for Nicole....

Not Sure About This!

Nicole and her Science class made a music video to show at our Science Fair and she came home with green hair. What kind of science experiment were they doing? I was a little shocked but was reassured that it would just wash out...whew!!!!! Green hair just isn't very attractive. I really like it when people put little peek a boo colors in there hair. Colors like red, purple, dark blue, etc...but fluorescent green hair is a bit too much.

The music video was a science song and they were supposed to be crazy scientists, I get that. I'm just glad it all washed out and she was back to normal the next day.
